A young person from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after reportedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on Tuesday, facing with a single charge of damaging property.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the local council said that CCTV footage captured a person putting fake eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

The accused made no plea and told the court she was unwell, as reported by news outlets, with the judge recommending her to secure a lawyer before her next court date in the final month of the year.

The following day the alleged incident, the city leader said that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be costly as the stickers were impossible to be detached without harming the art piece.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those members of our community who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

The mayor said the council would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the vandalism.

When the artwork was initially suggested, it received varied responses from the local community due to its price tag and appearance.

Costing 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater discovered in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
