While Swimmers Escaped Attack, Viral Picture Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, detected pops echoing around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, talking to a duo who had rushed up the incline in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up behind her. It was a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He moved towards something that certainly every instinct would tell you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Courage During Chaos

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and medical teams treating many victims.

Community Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was just one of many to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the scene of the attack serving as a impromptu hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen responding bravely, for instance rushing into the ocean to save people who were struggling.

After the attack, messages of support circulated widely. One post expressed appreciation for the responders who showed that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of beach patrol published a message, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are touched by the kindness directed at our team,” the group stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time beach safety officers, said that the staff acted heroically from the moment the shooting began through to late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many powerful narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” said a local official.

“The team exhibit selflessness every day in keeping our iconic beaches protected for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and process the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much positivity we have observed in the midst of such darkness.”
