"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of famous admirers have openly coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to form a group."

"So all is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

A former partner left Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will forever be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
