The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
