Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: From Appointment to Present

The former Arsenal captain assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. However, that first major trophy stands as his lone significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded upon being asked about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced the day after his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

Given that second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This comes despite Arteta presiding over a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks from the beginning of last season.

The manager currently has 18 months remaining on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that success is required sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

Arteta elaborated, highlighting the daily requirement to prove his worth. “In my view a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the hierarchy, yet identifying the team's buy-in as paramount. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The team heads into the weekend fixture managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Regardless of the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “objectives and communication” are vastly different from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the caliber we've reached.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
