The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
