Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the entity in the past.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
