The nation's Attorney General, the country's chief legal officer, has been compelled to resign after being found guilty of disclosing classified details in a highly contentious case that has intensified political divisions within the country.

The Supreme Court found that the attorney general had illegally disclosed details about the tax situation of businessman Alberto González Amador, who is the boyfriend of a senior conservative politician.
The court handed down a two-year ban from his post and a penalty of seven thousand two hundred euros. Additionally, he must compensate ten thousand euros to Mr González Amador as compensation.
