The nation's Attorney General, the country's chief legal officer, has been compelled to resign after being found guilty of disclosing classified details in a highly contentious case that has intensified political divisions within the country.

Court Ruling and Penalties

The Supreme Court found that the attorney general had illegally disclosed details about the tax situation of businessman Alberto González Amador, who is the boyfriend of a senior conservative politician.

The court handed down a two-year ban from his post and a penalty of seven thousand two hundred euros. Additionally, he must compensate ten thousand euros to Mr González Amador as compensation.

Political Consequences

The trial of the attorney general intensified the already acrimonious relations between the progressive administration of the nation's leader and the conservative political forces.

Contrasting positions were highlighted by reactions to the guilty verdict.

"The prime minister must offer an apology to Spaniards, step down and call elections, in that sequence," said Ester Muñoz for the conservative People's Party.

The government stated it did not agree with the decision but respected it and would move forward with the appointment of a new attorney general.

Legal Controversy

Nevertheless, numerous progressive lawmakers expressed outrage at what they perceived as a politically motivated ruling.

Health Minister MĂłnica GarcĂa, of the Sumar party, stated the conviction dealt a "lethal blow to the principle of innocent until proven guilty" and threw ordinary Spaniards under the bus when it came to the rule of law.

Case Background

The complicated legal matter originated in March 2024, when the attorney general's office issued a official statement indicating that Mr González Amador had requested a plea bargain after being found to have evaded tax payments worth €350,951.

The statement corrected mistaken press reports stating that the attorney general's office had proposed the bargain.

The origin of the false information was the communications director of the regional leader of the capital region.

Court Case Details

The businessman filed a complaint against the chief prosecutor, alleging his confidentiality was violated. The legal action against GarcĂa Ortiz also saw him accused of disclosing details about the affair to the media.

Legal authorities highlighted the prosecutor's decision to replace his mobile device as incriminating.

However, there was no conclusive proof linking GarcĂa Ortiz to the leak and several journalists stated under oath during the proceedings that he had not provided information of their information.

Regarding the press statement, the prosecutor stated he was merely rectifying the erroneous reports.

GarcĂa Ortiz can appeal against the decision.

Wider Political Implications

This comes as a severe blow for the national leader, who has been facing legal scrutiny on multiple issues.

  • His brother is scheduled for court proceedings for influence peddling
  • His wife is being examined for her commercial dealings
  • Former party officials in the Socialist Party are accused of managing a massive kickback scheme
