Pupils Push Back Over AI-Delivered College Course: "We Could Have Just Used ChatGPT"
Multiple learners at a British institution voiced deep dissatisfaction after finding out their digital module was largely delivered using AI.
New Path Dreams Diminished
One student and another participant were among forty-one enrollees who joined a programming module aiming to move into software engineering through a government-funded apprenticeship scheme.
However their anticipations were soon lowered when they faced AI-generated slides being presented by an synthetic voice.
āIf we turned in assignments that was produced artificially, we'd be expelled from the university,ā stated the student during a documented discussion with his instructor.
Repeated Concerns and University Reaction
Learners multiple times raised concerns about the AI materials, yet the institution seems to have continued using automated content.
Notably, the college has strict guidelines restricting learner use of AI, stating that turning in AI-generated work equals integrity violation.
Increasing Trend in Colleges
The scenario mirrors a larger movement across colleges progressively incorporating AI tools for education, content creation, and individual assessment.
- Recent research suggest nearly a fourth of UK instructors now use AI in their educational practices
- Government documents have celebrated generative AI's potential to transform education
- However many learners find the situation demoralizing rather than revolutionary
Telltale Evidence of Automated Creation
Participants detected several clues indicating computer-created content:
- Varying language style between American and British English
- Questionable file titles
- Surface-level information with periodic allusions to inappropriate US regulations
- Narration suddenly shifting to a foreign accent before switching back
Student Dissatisfaction and Career Concerns
One student voiced serious concern about his career prospects, saying he felt āstuck with this courseā after putting two years.
Another participant, experiencing a professional transition, stated he had chosen the program for valuable knowledge rather than merely a certification.
āBeing seated there with content that is simply unworthy of anybody's time,ā he remarked, āwhen you could be spending that time actually interacting with something valuable, is truly frustrating.ā
In spite of institutional claims about preserving learning outcomes, participants felt the final inclusion of real lecturers was inadequate and belatedā to address their basic issues.
