New Year's Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Throughout the UK
Weather experts are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Despite Warnings
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," stated the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Broad Advisories for Friday
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network.
Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Warnings Activated
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, wrapping up warm is completely key.
