Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
