Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed official commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of people who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the proposal.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance provision
  • Future governance of the area

Citizen Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

In front of the prime minister's residence in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Demonstrator one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of Israelis desire the conflict to end in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"Once the night arrives, the anxiety comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his face on me all night."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Medical Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area said another two dead people had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
