American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays due to weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports said travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.
