A female individual formerly staying at a female recovery facility in California allegedly took a stolen van and engaged in a hours-long police chase ending with her traveling across the border into the nation of Mexico on Monday.

Auto Theft Reported from Recovery Residence

As stated in a police announcement, a another female, Nicolle Walters, 45, notified authorities that her 2004 gray Toyota Sienna was missing, along with her vehicle key. The owner, who operates two female recovery residences, identified the suspect as one of the residents at Diana’s House Sober Living, located approximately an hour’s drive of Los Angeles.

“The keys were taken from my manager’s handbag. I happened to pull up right when it was happening,” she said, adding that the vehicle is used for the facility’s daily operations.

Dramatic Chase Unfolds Across Several Regions

Authorities tracked the van about 19 kilometers north in Simi Valley, where they tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Wilson refused to stop and accelerated rapidly. She reached speeds of about 90mph on the 118 freeway until the chase continued into Los Angeles county. At that juncture, local sheriff’s deputies transferred the pursuit to the CHP once the driver entered the Interstate 405 heading south.

“This one is particularly unusual in the context of the traffic conditions enabling individuals to persist on the freeway and extend this pursuit,” said a public information officer from the local law enforcement agency.

Wilson allegedly dodged all the spike strips tossed on the roadway by police, as documented in footage from above.

International Getaway and Aftermath Developments

The chase finally arrived at the international border by early afternoon, leading to the CHP to end its pursuit due to jurisdictional constraints.

The vehicle owner stated on Tuesday that the minivan was situated in Tijuana, Mexico and that she was coordinating with the CHP to recover the vehicle.

“Ultimately, I’m not concerned with the car,” she said. “I’m relieved aware she wasn’t hurt. The car is easily substituted.”

The sober living home owner, who has run Diana’s House Sober Living since October 2024, acknowledges that the path to recovery from addiction and trauma is often non-linear.

“This represents a psychological and substance abuse crisis,” Walters emphasized. “There is a need for more support. It is essential to provide more resources for those that are facing challenges.”

“The recovery process isn’t always pretty,” Walters concluded.
