Felicity Cloake's 60-Minute Party Strategy: Effortless Entertaining for Spontaneous Guests
During this festive period, when there's a lot happening that the most energetic individuals may sometimes anticipate the calm break of January, it is all too easy to overlook details. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has once been surprised awake while at work because of a text from a friend wondering, "What time should we come over later?" No worries; if you are forgetful, and just inclined toward spontaneous gatherings, I've got some solutions.
The Golden Rule to Great Parties
Firstly, and I cannot emphasize this enough, whether you've been planning for a year versus just a quarter-hour, the greatest parties are the easiest. What anyone is hoping for are a good chat, a drink to drink, and sufficient to eat that guests do not feel like chewing an arm off on the ride back. If you're not you are a fictional millionaire, nobody anticipates professional bartending, gourmet catering and entertainers.
The greatest gatherings are the easiest. However, a theme helps to disguise the reality you've just put the party together while coming home from work.
Choosing a Theme to Direct The Shopping
That said, a theme can be useful to conceal the fact you have only thrown this thing on on the way home from work. By concept, think of for example Christmas. Getting slightly more detailed (Nordic holidays, for instance, featuring mulled wine, aromatic cocktail, smoked fish and crispbreads, Nordic beats selection; alternatively Mexican Christmas, with traditional drink, refreshing lagers or margaritas, along with plenty of tortilla chips, tomato dip & guacamole, with festive music in the background) can narrow your choices on the necessary grocery run.
Smart Shopping for The Party
While shopping, select a couple of drinks (one alcoholic if you drink, a non-alcoholic one in case others don't want to) plus a few snacks that match the style, and get as much of them as you can afford, instead of fretting about giving people a wide selection. Nothing looks more abundant and celebratory as plenty – I'd consistently prefer to enter by a sink filled with chilled bottles of affordable crémant or cava over a small serving of fancy bubbly. (Add some bags of ice, as well; there is never sufficient ice.)
Beverages & Party Beverages Simplified
If you must show off and provide a special beverage, make sure to pre-mix a sizable amount in a jug so that you're not left faffing around with it while you should be enjoying yourself. After starting, ask a close friend or volunteer to monitor the drinks and top up if required until it runs out. Follow suit for the alcohol-free option; guests love to be given a task during gatherings so they can experience the positive vibes.
On the punch front, whatever formula you go for (there are many via search), skip anything too sweet – young ones present should have kid-friendly options – and if you have one, put a bottle of bitters within reach (don't add them to the bowl as they're not suitable for those who avoid alcohol entirely). Take care in presenting it so the soft punch isn't perceived like an afterthought; just spend a short time to slice a few rounds of fruit to the punch.
Food That Shine With Minimal Fuss
Personally, I would avoid the store-bought assortments of "party foods" that pop up in supermarkets at this time of year; they come across as overly complicated, and frequently require using the oven (should you go this route, know that all guests secretly favors herb bread or cocktail sausages regardless). It's my firm opinion you can't beat several really big bowls of tasty snacks (simple is universally liked), plus, assuming no issues, a package of big and excellent value containers of mixed nuts available in the South Asian section in stores, along with some ready-to-eat olives for color (you don't want to still be finding stones around the house in the future).
In case, similar to some, you think chips proper food, a single big slab of tasty cheese on a platter alongside crackers plus artfully draped grapes always looks visually appealing. A plate with some preserved or ready-to-eat prosciutto or seafood laid out on it (just one sort, unless money is no object), or a handsome ready-made pie, of the type that pop up on deli counters at this time of year, is more filling, while you truly won't fail with homestyle pieces of flatbread, since they don't need additional preparation.
