England to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground

The England national team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated qualification for a competition staged throughout the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an English men’s fixture since May 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to host the national team for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The English side are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, should they win their group, their round of 16 match would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Championship Opening and Rally

The championship was launched at an event in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the site by approximately 50 activists, who urged Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Signs were raised with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Fixture List

The first match of Euro 2028 will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will involve the Dragons if they make it.

Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at late afternoon.

It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for European club finals from the following campaign, will appeal to households and help engage a broader range of fans.

Participating Countries

The Irish team are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

All four host countries’ teams will take part in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through the standard process.

Venues and Playoffs

The Birmingham venue and The North London arena round out the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals played at every host’s main arena.

The qualifying draw will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a venue city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Tournament Vision

“It will be a tournament for the fans and a celebration of everything we love about the football – its emotion and capacity to unite individuals.”

More than three million passes, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be offered to supporters.
