California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor remarked when questioned about seriously considering a presidential run after the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Rising Profile as a Political Adversary
The California governor has come to the forefront as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, using his digital presence and championing a ballot measure that would boost the party's House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from critics.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. Duffy revealed plans to pull federal funds from California and threatened eliminating the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," he declared, following a this week's deadly accident in California involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.
Newsom's office pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had previously announced he was holding back $40 million from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office said in a recent comment addressing the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted poll revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his future for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The thought that a guy who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the voters."
