British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
