His half-century in the first innings was skittish, but valuable. Poor choice in the second innings.

Ben Stokes – 6

Returned from injury with a five-for, though looked out of touch when batting. Struggled in the field against Head's aggressive batting.

Jamie Smith – Four

Might possess the skills to succeed in Australia, yet must to smarten up. Will likely face plenty of bouncers from now on.

Atkinson – 5

Involved in the impressive English initial bowling performance and attempted to contribute with the bat later on. Among the bowlers that collapsed during the match.

Brydon Carse – Five

Similar to the previous, plus the spice of getting taken apart by Head.

Jofra Archer – Five

Appeared impressive while bowling in the first innings and proved the top among struggling teammates later. Might yet play a key role on the series.

Mark Wood – 5

Went without a wicket, yet massively impressive to just take part given his time away.

Jake Weatherald – 6

Debutant had tough luck to face to Jofra Archer early on, then played his part in the sensational pursuit of runs.

Khawaja – Three

A bizarre Test. Did not look fully fit and had time off the field. Held on to several important catches at slip, yet also looked immobile in the field. Earns a point for the injury which enabled Travis Head to bat as opener.

Labuschagne – Seven

An effective return to the team. Handled England's bowling pressure more effectively than most initially, then backed up Travis Head in the second.

Smith – Five

Looked out of sorts early on. Needless before the game attack on Monty Panesar.

Travis Head – Nine

Possibly unfair to not get a perfect score, but he attempted a pretty poor stroke in the first innings. His second-innings hundred was an all-time great performance.

Cameron Green – 5

Claimed the key dismissal of Pope in the first innings. Rattled by one Mark Wood bouncer during his innings. Barely required later in the match.

Alex Carey – Five

Tried an aggressive response versus the English attack on the first evening. Neat behind the stumps.

Mitchell Starc – Nine

Carried the burden of the attack without Pat Cummins and Hazlewood achieving the first Aussie Ashes 10-for for two decades.

Scott Boland – Six

Below his best in the first innings. Got better later to spark the England collapse.

Brendan Doggett – Six

Steady debut. More than able replacement for the main bowlers and others.

Lyon – Two

Almost a spectator during a game controlled by fast bowling. Maybe picked up a knock when struck by Wood.
