Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had pushed him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on Monday Trump embraced a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the war on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that encompass the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday preceded reports that the US was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he commented.
