A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
